Discover Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta

Discover Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta

Popular since Roman times, the Italian Lakes in the north of the country combine the ethereal beauty of deep azure waters in striking contrast with snow-capped mountains, their gentle lapping touching beguiling fishing villages that dot slender shorelines. An endless source of surprise and inspiration, every lake hides its own captivating secrets—from the romantic Lake Orta and its splendidly set San Giulio Island, to the lush shores of Lake Maggiore and its tropical gardens. A journey through the picturesque Borromean Islands reveals the beauty of graceful Italian-style gardens and elegant historic palaces, creating an atmosphere that is both refined and timeless—perfect for a stay defined by quiet sophistication and discovery.

  1. The Borromean Islands – A Private Journey Through Beauty
  2. Isola San Giulio – Timeless Silence and Spiritual Elegance
  3. Villa Taranto Botanical Gardens – A Botanical Masterpiece
  4. Castelli di Cannero
  5. Santa Caterina del Sasso – A Hidden Cliffside Sanctuary

Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta lend themselves beautifully to slow, layered itineraries—private boating, garden visits, and moments of stillness balanced with discreet luxury. They are perfect for clients who have “seen it all” and are now looking for something more nuanced, authentic, and emotionally resonant.

1. Where dreams come true – Lake Orta

A small jewel hidden in the corner of north-eastern Italy, Lake Orta welcomes visitors who drive the scenic road flanking its banks with charm in droves. The shimmering light changing as the day goes by, this small lake is a confection of authentic allure.

Reach captivating San Giulio island with a short, dreamy ferry ride from medieval Orta San Giulio, its Piazza Motta seemingly founded to give a sublime bird’s eye view on the place. On the island itself lies one of its most evocative experiences: the Path of Silence. This contemplative walk circles the monastery, inviting visitors to slow down and reconnect through discreet messages dedicated to reflection and inner calm. It’s an experience that feels deeply aligned with today’s luxury traveler—where true privilege is found in stillness, authenticity, and a rare sense of peace.

Walk along its alleys to capture lovely glimpses of the water and make your way to the Sacro Monte di San Francesco: this old pilgrimage site is part of a series of nine sacred Alpine Mountains across Piedmont and Lombardy and can be reached via twenty small chapels. The views from the top are mesmerizing, combined with a genteel atmosphere that makes this tranquil expanse of water so captivating. It comes as no surprise that such serene surroundings inspired learned souls to create some of Italy’s most iconic brands: Omegna, to the north of the lake, is home to prestigious Alessi, Bialetti and Lagostina companies, parading Italian artistry and design across the world.

A special travel tip: experience Lake Orta at its most magical by staying overnight and visiting San Giulio Island early in the morning or at sunset, when the day visitors have left. Pair it with a private guide for a deeper, more meaningful discovery of the island and the Sacro Monte—transforming a simple visit into a truly intimate and memorable experience

2. Travel in time – the Borromean Islands

Perfectly placed across the shores of Stresa, picturesque Borromean Islands conjure images of grandeur and past nobility. Of the four islands making up this spectacular archipelago, only three can be visited – Isola Bella, Madre and Isola dei Pescatori – making a visit even more alluring. They can be reached from several locations on the lake, but the ride from Stresa is perhaps the most spectacular: as you approach them, their captivating atmosphere becomes more tangible, becoming almost magnetic as you step on them.

The most visited of them all, Isola Bella triumphs with its impressive, baroque Palazzo Borromeo and lovely Italian-style gardens – watch out for the white peacocks! Meander around its rooms to discover the extraordinary Galleria Berthier, showcasing masterpieces by Raphael, Titian, Correggio and Guido Reni.

Visit Isola Madre for its superb Botanical Garden, one of the oldest and most enchanting in Italy, surrounding the elegant Palazzo Madre. Here, a rare collection of exotic plants thrives thanks to the lake’s unique microclimate, creating a lush, almost dreamlike atmosphere where peacocks roam freely and every corner invites quiet contemplation. In contrast, Isola dei Pescatori retains the authentic charm of an old fishermen’s village, with its narrow lanes and timeless spirit—perfect for a memorable lakeside meal and a toast to a journey filled with beauty and delight.

A special travel tip: experience the islands early in the morning or at golden hour with a private boat, and enhance the visit with a private guide—whether for a deeper immersion into the art and history of the palaces or a refined exploration of the botanical gardens. Arriving before the crowds—or lingering as the light softens at sunset—completely transforms the atmosphere, revealing a quieter, more elegant side of Lake Maggiore that feels truly privileged and unforgettable

3. Wellness starts from nature

Surrounded by nature, we acquire renewed energies and feel in tune with ourselves, enjoying the dazzling colours of spring and the serene atmosphere created by plants and flowers. Go one step further and think about doing yoga in a lovely garden overlooking the lake, taking part in a meditation class surrounded by flowers in bloom or listening to a choir singing. These activities are all possible at Villa Taranto in Verbania, the exceptional garden created by the Scottish captain Neal McEacharn in 1931 and welcoming visitors with its rare botanical species, their seeds coming from all over the world.  Colourful shades and scented shrubs paint a rainbow symphony that nourishes the soul, the blue of the lake in the background, towering peaks in the distance. A blissful sight that can also be found at Parco Pallavicino in Stresa or the Giardino Alpino on the hill above it, along with the many gardens that adorn the beautiful palaces overlooking the lake. The mild climate contributed to the creation of such gems, in a triumph of colours and flowers that is hard to forget.

A special travel tip: plan your visit in the early morning or late afternoon for the most enchanting light, and consider a private guided walk through the gardens to truly appreciate their botanical richness and hidden details. For a more elevated experience, combine it with a wellness moment—yoga or meditation surrounded by nature—transforming a simple visit into a deeply restorative and memorable escape

4. Between a hermitage and a palace - Lake Maggiore’s east bank

Incredibly cinematic, the hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso in Leggiuno, on the eastern bank of Lake Maggiore, appears like a vision between Laveno and Arolo. The original convent dates back to the 13th century, with the church and a further convent being added in the following centuries. Reach it from the Lombardy side and walk the several steps to enjoy its prime position, or take the ferry from Stresa to make it even more spectacular. Certainly an unforgettable view, its calmness and serenity will linger and stay with you long after you’ve left.

Travel further south and you’ll find the imposing Rocca di Angera, towering over the lake and capturing visitors with its exceptional medieval gardens – do not miss the Garden of Small Herbs, the Museum of Dolls and Toys and the historic rooms – visit the exceptional Sala di Giustizia, decorated with 15th c. frescoes over its walls and vaults. This really is an arresting sight.

A special travel tip: combine both experiences in a single, beautifully paced day with a private boat transfer. Begin with Santa Caterina del Sasso in the quiet of the morning, then continue to Rocca di Angera with a private guide to unlock its history and hidden details. Ending the day with a relaxed lakeside lunch nearby adds that final touch of understated luxury that defines the Lake Maggiore experience

5. Magic islands: the castles of Cannero

Located in the north-eastern stretch of the lake, shortly before reaching Switzerland, the castles of Cannero are truly evocative. Set on two rocky islets amid pure waters, these ancient fortified complexes can now be visited with private guided tours, setting off from Cannobio. Following a ten-year restoration campaign, the site is now considered a museum of itself, meaning you’ll sense history as you wander around the small site, embellished by its pristine waters – so pure that they have been awarded a Blue Flag. The 1519 fortress, commissioned by the Borromeo family, was added to an existing 15th c. tower, known as “Malapaga”, erected to control the lands by five local brothers. Back then, the area was subject to pirates and bandits, so visiting the place means feeling in touch with the past, while you admire the shoreline from a different viewpoint. The magic lives on!

A special travel tip: elevate the experience with a private boat excursion timed for late afternoon, when the light softens and the waters turn almost silvery. Pair it with a curated visit led by a knowledgeable guide, and perhaps a discreet aperitivo on board—transforming a historical discovery into a truly memorable and immersive moment on the lake.

6. A refined yet authentic experience to consider

If you’re thinking of something truly authentic around Lake Maggiore, a cheese tasting here is less about formality and more about sense of place—small producers, alpine pastures, and flavors that reflect the landscape.

Ossola Valley – The Hidden Gem.  Just north of the lake, the Val d'Ossola is where things become really interesting. Here you’ll find exceptional cheeses like Bettelmatt, produced only in high-altitude pastures during summer months—rare, aromatic, and very sought-after in gourmet circles. Private tastings can be arranged directly at alpine farms (alpeggi) or in small affineurs’ cellars, often paired with local honey, mountain herbs, and elegant Nebbiolo wines from nearby northern Piedmont.

Around Verbania & Stresa – Soft Elegance. Closer to the lake, near Verbania and Stresa, you’ll find more delicate, creamy cheeses—fresh goat cheeses, tome and artisanal ricotta. These are perfect for a relaxed tasting with a lake view—simple, but beautifully curated when done privately.

Gorgonzola – A True Italian Icon No cheese journey in this region would be complete without a tasting of Gorgonzola, one of Italy’s most celebrated DOP cheeses, originally from nearby Lombardy and Piedmont. From the delicate, creamy dolce to the more intense piccante, a guided tasting reveals its remarkable versatility—perfectly paired with acacia honey, walnuts, or even a glass of passito or structured red wine for a more elevated experience

A More Curated Experience (Highly Recommended) For a luxury traveler, I would always elevate this into a moment, not just a tasting:

  • Private visit to a family-run producer
  • Guided tasting with a cheese expert
  • Pairing with small-production wines or even local gin
  • Setting: terrace overlooking the lake or a hidden mountain hut
